چکیده

Astrophysical tests of Planck-suppressed Lorentz violations had been extensively studied in recent years and very stringent constraints have been obtained within the framework of effective field theory. There are however still some unresolved theoretical issues, in particular regarding the so called “naturalness problem” — which arises when postulating that Plancksuppressed Lorentz violations arise only from operators with mass dimension greater than four in the Lagrangian. In the work presented here we shall try to address this problem by looking at a condensed-matter analogue of the Lorentz violations considered in quantum gravity phenomenology. Specifically, we investigate the class of two-component BECs subject to laserinduced transitions between the two components, and we show that this model is an example for Lorentz invariance violation due to ultraviolet physics. We shall show that such a model can be considered to be an explicit example high-energy Lorentz violations where the “naturalness problem” does not arise.

Neutrino Oscillations and Lorentz Violation

Most data acquired to date by experiments in particle physics are successfully described by the minimal Standard Model (SM). One exception is the observation of neutrino oscillations, which are now well established and provide a compelling indication that the minimal SM requires modification. The inclusion of small masses in the neutrino sector of the SM suffices to describe the bulk of the exp...

Probing Lorentz Symmetry with Gravitationally Coupled Matter

The Standard Model of particle physics together with Einstein’s General Relativity provide a remarkably successful description of known phenomena. General Relativity describes gravitation at the classical level, while all other interactions are described down to the quantum level by the Standard Model. However, a single quantum-consistent theory at the Planck scale remains elusive. Ideally, exp...

Lorentz violation and Crab synchrotron emission : a new constraint far beyond the Planck scale

The structure of spacetime at the Planck scale may lead to a breakdown of Lorentz invariance at high energies in the form of non-linear dispersion relations for fundamental particles. We show that observations of synchrotron emission from the Crab nebula constrain the energy scale EQG of subluminal Lorentz violation in the electron dispersion relation at order O(E/EQG) to EQG > 4.5×10 27 GeV. T...

Mass hierarchies in Lorentz-violation-induced dynamical mass models

In [1], a model with minimal violation of Lorentz invariance (LIV), associated with a mass scale M, has been put forward as a way of dynamically generating fermion masses. In [2], such models have been embedded in more microscopic quantum gravity theories, such as multibrane world models with space-time defects, in which cases the scale M is close to the Planck scale, for instance, in the model...

CPT and lorentz tests with muons

Precision experiments with muons are sensitive to Planck-scale CPT and Lorentz violation that is undetectable in other tests. Existing data on the muonium ground-state hyperfine structure and on the muon anomalous magnetic moment could be analyzed to provide dimensionless figures of merit for CPT and Lorentz violation at the levels of 4x10(-21) and 10(-23).
